As September draws to a close the autumn leaves are gathering in London. Autumn is my favourite time of year wherever I am. I love the crisp cool mornings and bright sunny days. It is the perfect time of year to travel. The crowds of summer have disappeared and you can wander to your heart’s content, soaking up the atmosphere of your destination.
This week we are flying to Venice for an early birthday treat. I visited the city briefly many years ago and have been yearning to return. My studies of the Venetian Republic and the Italian Renaissance sparked a life long interest in the lagoon city. I am looking forward to exploring hidden streets, canals and squares and of course the art and culture of this most beautiful of cities. We will also no doubt enjoy the famous seafood based Venetian cuisine.
If you would like to learn more about history of Venice, Paul Strathern’s book The Spirit of Venice follows the fortunes of the city through its famous residents including Marco Polo and Casanova.
